I've been enjoying some honey roasted cashews this week. Highly recommend.

I know these threads always devolve into political name calling and tantrums, but really, as someone said earlier in this thread, no matter how you personally assess your risk and comfort-level with COVID, you can have a great time in the OBX.

Will it be the same experience you would have had in 2019? No, but you can still have a great (and safe, if that's your thing) time!

If the fates smile upon me I’ll be in Corolla in a few weeks.

Same here, first week of October. And keeping with my family's personal risk assessment, we'll keep public interactions to a minimum and we'll be masked when we do venture out.

you can have a great time in the OBX.

Maybe. Vaccinated, then likely a great time, assuming you don't infect someone who is unvaccinated.

Unvaccinated, then luck of the draw and the amount of human contact. Much higher age-dependent risk of hospitalization and death for the unvaccinated.

Not sure I would want to be unvaccinated on OBX, with a 20+% positivity rate.

I no longer feel an ethical obligation to change my behavior to protect the unvaccinated. I’ll wear my envo and minimize public contact. Shots have been available at the grocery store free of charge with no appointment necessary for 6 months now.

If you are unvaccinated, that’s on you at this point in time.

More or less agreed, Aliphatic.

The question was asked, nonetheless. I don't believe the question stipulated vaccinated vs unvaccinated status.

Yes, but if you are unvaccinated and you take precautions you can minimize your risk and still be safe and have a good time.

In 2020 we came down for a week, brought all of our food with us from home, and aside for gas & bathroom breaks on the ride to & from the beach house, we didn’t have direct human interaction with another soul that entire week.

Was it a different experience from all the other years we’d gone down? Surely. Did we still have a good time? Absolutely.

Last month when we came down, we got out a bit more than in 2020, but still have minimal interactions with others, and I gotta say, we’ve not missed eating out at the restaurants. It’s a lot more enjoyable to not have to worry about getting everyone off the beach or out of the pool and hauling large groups to restaurants.

Even when things are normal again, I think we are much less likely to go to restaurants in the OBX.

Yes, of course, if unvaccinated, you can take precautions, have a good time, and still be hospitalized and die.

Basic precautions go a long way, we did two weeks in September of 2020 and no one got sick. Granted this was before delta and we double masked, take out only, etc etc.

I believe that a fully vaccinated group, taking proper precautions, can easily minimize the risk of contracting delta while going to obx for a week.

Ocean Blue, are we already at the deaths from the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic? About 679,000 deaths in the US now from COVID? My God, how is this possible?

Does anybody think anymore? The US population is 3 times what it was in 1918.

Here's quote I just looked up commenting about this subject:

"Comparing events that happened more than a century apart has its perils. For instance, the population of the United States in 1918 was a third of what it is now. So as a percentage of the national population, the Spanish flu deaths still has the lead on Covid-19."

Thanks, KHbiker. Was referencing absolute deaths, 679,000, or thereabouts, not relative deaths. We've surpassed the 1918 Spanish flu in terms of absolute deaths. Almost 700,000 Americans gone.

Used to ride a Norton Commando decades ago. That was quite a pony.

The NCL Breakaway is sailing out of NYC on Sunday. Really curious how that cruise is going to go. I've got a 10 day booked in January

Laszlo, looks like the Breakaway is docked at Pier 88, just north of us.

Are they requiring proof of vaccination? Don't know that I'd want to be on a boat for 10 days with unvaccinated folks. Can't imagine NCL would want that either, given the potential for lawsuits.

Thanks, but no thanks, John. Can't help you here, not sure what you don't get.

Water temps in or around the 80s? No brown jelly fish this year? Perfect weather except for one day for Ida due east? None of which is an obligation of mine to report in a trip report or, which, via pictures or otherwise, is any of your, or this board's, business. Get real.

If you are tracking IP addresses, I use a VPN. No idea whether what you are seeing is NYC or Boise, Idaho, for all I know. No interest to me.

Otherwise, knock if off, please.

Why even come to the "OBX Connection"? Do you really think you're changing anyones minds re: Covid or Politics? If you haven't figured it out, the majority of the people here want to talk Outer Banks.

Hmmm. This is a weird comment. If you're using a VPN, you should know where you're IP is from. Kinda scary if you don't. I'd look into another provider. Don't worry, I'm not looking for you. You seem to know a little bit about my background, in which case you'd also know I would already have that info if I wanted it.

Otherwise, knock if off, please.

That's a great message. You should read it.

As a chemist and someone who reads a lot of scientific papers, we live in a really good area that one can feel comfortable avoiding the virus, or any other virus for that matter. NB: This is not a political post, I don't care as to your political or vax views, just simply an opinion based on scientific reading.

First and foremost, COVID is a coronavirus which is a right-handed RNA virus as opposed to a left-handed RNA virus which is classified as influenza, or, the flu. Both are airborne, and are typically 50 - 150 nanometers in size, so they are very small and respiratory in nature in terms of infection. That is not good news for front-line medical personnel as they are generally exposed to airborne viral loads when treating patients, and the PPE (personal protection equipment) only helps for short periods of time.

But, as far as visiting the OBX, being outdoors helps tremendously. Even if one is downwind of an infected person who is shedding the virus, the slight breezes outdoors will dissipate the virus particles quickly. They do not live outdoors for very long. In fact, a Harvard/BU Medical School study found that UV-A rays kill COVID faster than UV-B rays. That was significant as, one, there's a lot more UV-A rays that get through our atmosphere than UV-B, and two, UV-B are higher frequency and affect us more than UV-A. If you get a sunburn, that's UV-B, so the fact UV-A kills COVID better means, get outside, get some sun, and let the greatest virus killer in our solar system do some work.

Are they requiring proof of vaccination? Don't know that I'd want to be on a boat for 10 days with unvaccinated folks. Can't imagine NCL would want that either, given the potential for lawsuits.

To follow up, NCL requires 100% vaccination. Not only do you need to show proof, uploaded to your NCL account you are tested at the pier prior to getting on. The Breakaway cruises to Bermuda are a little different. Bermuda requires everyone headed over to take a PCR test within 96 hours of arrival. So yes, passengers on NCL going to Bermuda are not only vaccinated but they are being tested twice. A cruise is probably the safest place you can be Lol. Cruise ships are also sailing at 80% capacity as far as I know. The BA left 5 hours late because some passengers failed to have a PCR test done and uploaded to Bermuda web site. They were given two options, either go home or pay for $250 for a rapid PCR test that was done in NYC. NCL and reps from Bermuda arranged for people to have the rush test done and then return to the pier for boarding. I'm not sure if they will offer that again for the other cruises.

If you test positive at the pier you are tested again, if both test are positive you are sent packing.... you will get a full refund either cash or credit, your choice.

I actually think it was very nice of the Bermuda Government and NCL to have something set up at the pier as they really didn't have to. The protocols were very clearly stated and passengers were told that they would not be allowed to board without the approved TA. They really didn't have to help passengers who didn't bother to follow instructions, delaying sailing, and racking up port charges when there were plenty of passengers who somehow managed to complete everything that was needed.
