2nd Try- Some Gems, but Brasserie needs improvement with food offerings.
Visited the Delta One Lounge again late this week coming off a TATL in bound flight with a US domestic connection.
Not mentioned that much in this thread is the lemonade bar prior to the entrance to the quiet area/wellness area. The food offered is outstanding at this area, as the hidden gem is the Tuna Yakitori with Yuzo Ponzu skewer (tuna is seared with a very tasty mariade) and the Watermelon tomato with Feta cheese crumble pipitas skewer was very good. I did not try the Beef Yakitori with Chimichurri. The Rosemary Lavender Lemonade was very good, as I had a glass after the message chair as I waited for the Grown Alchemist Recovery Remedy Spa Treatment. Well needed after a long 6 days in Ibiza. I entered the D1 lounge around 1pm and the wait for a Spa Treatment was 40 min, and the wait for a massage chair was less. than 3 min. I recommend 1st signing up with Spa attendant and to use the massage chair while waiting (the massage chair is reserved via the kiosk).
The Charles De Cazanoze Champagne is just down right awful and gross-- after 1 sip I returned to the bartender. I recall being served Veuve Clicquot at the JFK Centurion Lounge when it 1st opened, as the Delta One offering is college grade swill. I returned to the lemonade bar for a Rosemary Lavender Lemonade with a Tequila "Boozy Add-On". Talking with a traveler at the bar he also commented on how loud the Delta One lounge is mid-afternoon to early evening, as it has to be the New York culture trying to be louder than the next person. My favorite JFK lounge/bar is still JFK Centurion Lounge SpeakEasy.
The margarita flat bread was very good. I gave the eggplant parm a 2nd chance, but the eggplant had no taste. Must be a frozen eggplant product and not made fresh. The pomodoro sauce is good, but can't overcome the bland eggplant.
Went back to the Brasserie to give it a second try for a pre-departure dinner. Hamachi crudo was alright, as the fish lacked taste. Rotisserie chicken was fair, as this dish tasted better my 1st visit. The Lasagna Bolognese was down right awful, as the menu describes as "Lasagna Bolognese with grand paramo, broccoli rabe and pomodoro". I was expecting the broccoli rabe to be served on the side as a vegetable, but it was folded within the lasagna. This gave the lasagna a bitter taste, as I have never had meat sauce with a bitter vegetable lasagna--this does not pair well taste wise. I was raised in a traditional New York Italian family, as this dish had no mozzarella, ricotta or parmesan cheese. The bolognese sauce was so so and has room for improvement, but this is coming from a person (me) who learned to cook a homemade bolognese sauce in Bologna, Italy. The table next to me had the Corn Agnolotti as they enjoyed the dish that came highly recommended from their server.
The severs and all of the staff are outstanding, and the decor is very nice, especially with the fresh flowers and warm color hues--but the quality of the food and drink offerings are more strikes than hits. For example, the Red Blend, Intercept, Charles Woodson, was served on my D1 flight and in the D1 lounge. If the Delta One Brasserie wasn't a complimentary restaurant, I would not have returned for a second visit. Delta needs to do something about the noise level, maybe I'm just spoiled how quiet and tranquil European airport lounges are.
As we all know there are rumors of Delta unbundling the Delta One cabin, as I foresee the Delta One Lounge being a add on service, and wouldn't put it past Delta to charge $350 - $400 plus per segment to access. Looking forward to see what future menu changes there are, both for food and drink.
