I came across a few old Hatteras photos at my parents house and I thought I would share. This pic was our family's first of many trips with captain Ernie on the Albatross. My parents doubled up on whites and this was the first to be boated. The other tagged and released. The mount is still in great shape and hangs on my parents wall. I was four at the time and still can't believe my parents took me and my sister out at that age, but am really glad they did! (Then again, we also road without seatbelts). This trip was on the Albatross I and was back in 1971. |

I used to be embarrassed of this photo, but now I am old enough to not care. My dad and I were fishing in the salt pond near the Point back in the 70's, I am guessing around 1973. An inlet was open from the pond to the ocean and I nailed the spot while my dad didn't catch a single fish. My dad wanted to take a picture of me holding some of the fish so he stuck my fingers through their gills. Needless to say, I was not real happy about it. |

Me and my first King and a few amberjack to make for a decent day! By this age we graduated to the Albatross III with captain Ernie. |

Those are great, Fossilridge! Wonderful family memories and you still have the pics. Thanks Bent. I saw your earlier fishing pics from your prior post and they were what prompted me to share mine. |

Thanks Vanative and Tilly. My best childhood memories are from Hatteras, and I am blessed to have parents that provided me the opportunity and experiences in which I had. This past summer my daughter had an internship working remotely and took a second job on Hatteras. She lived at the beach house, and said she had the best summer of her life. She was able to do a good bit of sunrise and sunset surfing with a really great group of people. Here is a pic I took of her one evening from our beach access. I believe that when we are gone, two things we can leave our kids are great memories and exciting experiences! |

Same here, Fossilridge. My parents brought us to the Banks (what we always called this place) for the first time in 1968. Summer after summer we made the trek. My husband and I honeymooned in SNH in 1979. Finally, in 1989, my mom and dad bought a cottage in NH where they lived for 30 years. My heart is so full of sweet memories of the Outer Banks. I too thank my parents for those memories. Now a fourth generation of our family is building memories on this special place. As a matter of fact, we are all (my husband and I and our kids and grands)heading down very soon for another week of creating family bonds and memories in the sand. My mom and dad would be so thrilled to see us carrying on with the legacy they created for us. Love your pics! |

I remember the old Buxton Woods inlet. Unfortunately, the environmentalist forced the closure of the sluice gates that drained Buxton Woods because it wasn't right to let all of that rainwater run into the ocean. (Sheesh!) Now the Cape Point campground floods out on big rain events and what's floating around in there is percolate from the bath house septic fields. Yuck! |

Lolly, most will never know how truly lucky you were to have that experienced. I am happy for you! Blessed indeed... My first trip was in diapers in 69' and my parents bought their first lot in 72'. My parents were not wealthy in any sense, but scraped and saved to mange to keep it. |

Now the Cape Point campground floods out on big rain events and what's floating around in there is percolate from the bath house septic fields. Yuck! My dad and I used to fish the u-shaped pond north of the Cape Pont campground. It was loaded with huge largemouth bass and cotton mouths. For a few years there were a family of otters in that pond. Closing the "Buxton Woods inlet" killed that spot for us (not going to wade in snake infested water to get back there). The salt pond inlets would come and go depending on storms. We used to catch some huge flounder in that inlet when it was open. When closed we would crab and there was a shallow flat near the campground side that was loaded with razor clams. On time we found starfish in it. My dad and I had to cross the salt pond inlet at dark to get back to the campground on night after fishing the point. That was back when you could have the point to yourself. Depending on how the salt pond inlet formed and what tide was in, you could wade and swim in it, even ride ride boogie boards in it. The next day you could get washed out to sea and drown. That thing was pretty sketchy. |

Now the Cape Point campground floods out on big rain events and what's floating around in there is percolate from the bath house septic fields. Yuck! LOL! I drove out to the Point one night on Labor Day of 1977 for my first time south of Salvo Campground. We fished the salt pond thinking it was the ocean. Came back with a bunch of Croakers. The next day we saw where we were really fishing. Around the early eighties I towed a water skier around in the pond with my 14' V-Hull surf launch boat. A ranger watched us for a half hour and finally approached. He said he couldn't find anything in the rule book saying we couldn't do that, but it just didn't feel right. The next year the "No motorized craft allowed" sign appeared at the pond. |

What an awesome pic...harkens back to when (before we had cams to check) you really didn't know what conditions were like until you crested the dune. |
