Foundation Q&A
In 1981, the Kappa Delta Foundation was created when the late Dorothea Cavin (Alpha Psi-Drury) left Kappa Delta the largest single bequest it had ever received. Since that time, the foundation has supported Kappa Delta’s mission to build confident sisters and inspire them to action.

- Is giving to KDs philanthropies giving to KDF?
- Why does Kappa Delta need money?
- How does the foundation raise money?
- If I donate, where does my money go?
- Why should I consider making a gift?
- To express gratitude for your KD experience.
- To honor a loved one.
- To ensure Kappa Delta will remain vibrant and strong in the future.
- How will the foundation recognize my gift?
How are the sorority and foundation different?
The foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation, while Kappa Delta Sorority is a 501(c)(7) corporation. As a 501(c)(3), your gifts to the foundation are tax-deductible. While the sorority offers the member experience we all know and love, the foundation provides a way to enhance your member experience. We offer undergraduate and graduate scholarships to support sisters in their academic endeavors. We also fund speakers for various events such as National Convention, leadership training for LDCs, and more!

Is giving to KDs philanthropies giving to KDF?
While Kappa Delta supports several philanthropies, the Kappa Delta Foundation is, in fact, a philanthropy of its own! Sisters can choose to donate to the foundation just like any other non-profit organization.

Why does Kappa Delta need money?
The Kappa Delta experience looks different than it did even a few decades ago. Tuition has more than doubled in the last 30 years, even when adjusting for inflation, and a sister would have to work a full-time, minimum wage job for almost the entire calendar year to afford just one year of tuition and nothing else. The changing landscape of our college campuses means that the needs of our sisters are changing too. Donations to the foundation allow Kappa Delta to continue to meet the needs of our sisters, whether through scholarships, leadership training, or other support.

How does the foundation raise money?
At the collegiate level, a sister’s first donation to the Kappa Delta Foundation is to The Golden Circle. The foundation also mails fundraising letters, participates in Giving Tuesday and utilizes the White Rose Garden. Sisters may also make pledges, purchase commemorative bricks, include the foundation in their will, give stock gifts and establish donor-advised funds.

If I donate, where does my money go?
The generous donations of sisters, families and friends allow the Kappa Delta Foundation to provide undergraduate and graduate scholarships, educational programming, leadership opportunities and philanthropic support to a number of worthwhile causes.

Emily Cansler (Nu-Oklahoma State) has always known she wants to help people in need. The Muriel Johnstone graduate scholarship has been instrumental in her pursuit of a Physician’s Assistant master’s degree, and she can`t wait to one day “pay it forward” and help another sister chasing her academic dreams. “Since beginning this program, I have realized that I am exactly where I need to be. When I graduate, I hope to become a family physician’s assistant that serves a rural Oklahoma community and specializes in women’s health, something that I have been passionate about for a long time. This scholarship directly helps not only me, but my future patients too.”

The Long Beach alumnae chapter used a KiDs grant from the KD Foundation to support back-to-school shoe distribution with local nonprofit His Little Feet. Because of their hard work, 140 under-resourced local children were able to get the shoes they needed! Gail Freedman (Sigma Xi-Bethany) said, “So many children were helped thanks to the generosity and heart for children demonstrated by the KDF KiDs grant!”
