My son rented one of their houses in Kitty Hawk. Lots of family with them (we live here and our house was full too.) They filled the fridge the first day and said, "Hmm it's not staying shut." Seal was completely shot. You could see inside from outside along the edge and unless we ducktaped it shut, it wasn't happening. Cleaners should have noticed this long ago as it wasn't a new problem - probably did but nothing was done.
Then they tried to make grilled cheese sandwiches and soup for dinner - pretty simple meal! But multiple burners didn't work and the oven barely got warm. They let the PM know and they said they'd send someone - never saw or heard from them again. Luckily they had brought two crockpots with them and made do all week with chili and spaghetti-type stuff.
Going out for dinner in summer with a large party is not feasible, as we all know. It's one reason to rent a big house with seating for many.
And people talk about sandy pools and we laugh at them - but this pool wasn't sandy it was black on the bottom and sides - hadn't been properly scrubbed for summer. They swam in it anyway as the water was clear, but sheesh.
$7,000+ for the week.
I'm going to blame the PM on this one: YES the owner has to cough up the funds to maintain the house, but PMs need to start turning down owners who won't comply with basic maintenance.

They’d be getting an in person visit at their office from me.
Thats risking food poisoning from a fridge that won’t keep food safe and/or some kind of infection from a dirty pool. Yuck! AND you get to pay $7000!

This story is becoming more and more common at the Outer Banks. I have two friends who went down this year and had similar stories.

I have had exactly two problems with VRBO in twenty plus years. One place, we could not get into because the housekeepers locked all the doors - they were supposed to leave one unlocked. The second was linens were not delivered, but did arrive about 8pm.

In my experience with VRBOs, we have fared well and the owners have bent over backwards to assist when we have rented properties. Just that owners' touch that makes all of the difference.
I rented a VRBO for myself and three co workers about four years ago in the mountains. They left us wine and salty goodies with a nice card and their phone number in case we needed anything. We had a ball bashing our idiot bosses and the home was great. My daughter has had wonderful luck with VRBOs in Oregon and Washington State. We always go that route in our family.

We had similar issues with Surf or Sound and we paid alot for rhe house . Like the experience you mentioned ,the PM didn't care and nothing was fixed. Last year a $7000 a week house didn't have hot water for five of the seven days and the owner and Resort Realty did nothing. Either we have the worst luck or its becoming the norm.
